Bruce was named for E.L Bruce, who was known to have pick many a sweet potato in the summer fields of Vardaman.
The Town of Bruce is served by the Calhoun County School District.
The city is proud of its athletics; especially the Bruce Trojan High School football team, which was named 2A State Champions in 1996.
There are three public schools in the Calhoun County School District: Bruce, Calhoun City, and Vardaman; and one private school, Calhoun Academy.
